Meet Mike, our Talent Acquisition Manager in the US 🇺🇸  who’s not only leading a team of recruiters but also plays a pivotal role in building a new Business Development team from the ground up. Tell us about your journey to Groupon and what is your role?

I have a long career in Talent Acquisition as I take pride in finding the right people for the right roles - it’s a win for the company and a win for the candidate.  I am currently managing a team of Recruiters and we are not only hiring for all roles in the US, but we are also helping to build out a new Business Development team from the ground up.  How exciting is that?

What does a typical day look like?

It varies day to day.  I am normally involved in meetings to ensure everything is running smoothly and I am also working closely with the team and the Leaders, however, I am also having daily interviews with candidates for our open roles.

Can you give us a sneak peek into some exciting projects you are working on?

I mentioned earlier how we are building out a Business Development team in Chicago from the ground up.  It is a heavy lift as there are so many moving parts, but it gives me insight and connections into all of the different organizations within Groupon that are involved in this project.  This is a project that will have a great impact on the Groupon Sales organization and I am excited to be a part of it!

Groupon is going through a unique transformation. What's the most exciting aspect of it?

I am a builder.  Whether that means building something from scratch or taking what is in place and helping to make it better and more efficient.  I feel that with the transformation that is currently happening at Groupon, it enables people to step outside of their job responsibilities and not only help to build and grow Groupon as a company, but also to grow their career within the company.

What has been your proudest moment so far at Groupon?

My proudest moment so far has been the ability for the US Talent Acquisition team to come together so quickly and immediately start making an impact on growing the Business Development team.  I could not have asked for a better team!

What do your parents think you do?

To be honest, when I first graduated from college and told my parents that I was going to be a Recruiter, they had no clue what I was talking about or what I would be doing.  It didn’t take them long to realize what I would be responsible for.  They were very excited when I told them I was going to work for Groupon as it is a very well known company, especially in Chicago.

What’s your favourite Groupon memory? 

Receiving an offer letter from Groupon!

What was your first job?

I was a caddy at a local Country Club when I was 14 years old.  

What is one non-work activity or hobby that you're into? 

I play Kubb.  It is a Swedish lawn game that is kind of like a combination between bowling and horseshoes.  I am in a weekly summer league and we also play at tournaments in the US.

If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be and why?

Steve Jobs.  He is a fascinating individual that accomplished so much in his lifetime.  I think it would be very interesting to talk with him about some of his accomplishments and things that he experienced during his lifetime. 

Why should people join Groupon and what is unique about Groupon?

Groupon is a great company that will keep you challenged but also provides an amazing opportunity to grow and learn.

What qualities do you believe are essential in a team member, especially in our current phase of transformation?

You must be able to deal with ambiguity.  There are a lot of changes occurring and you need to be able to adapt and roll with them.

Favorite Groupon you've purchased?  My daughter and I love to eat sushi so I am always purchasing a Groupon for a local sushi restaurant that we love.
